Editing the Taxonomy
From Inpho Wiki
Overview of the Task
This page shows a list of pairs of terms (or labels) for philosophically significant “ideas” that have been extracted from the content of the encyclopedia. These terms cover a variety of concepts, distinctions, arguments, positions, and theories that are mentioned in entries of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP). To help us build a representation of the meaningful relationships among these ideas, you are being asked to classify some connections that have been deemed potentially significant by the software that is under development.
Interface
For every node selected in the ontology tree to the left of this page is a list of pairs of ideas, with the second idea being the node selected and the first idea that have been deemed significant based on our extraction from the SEP. For each pair of ideas, you are asked to answer the following questions:
- How related is the term on the left to the term on the right?: Your answer to this question should be limited to the relationship between the two terms within the part of the taxonomy you are viewing. (For example, if you were answering questions in the general context of Kant's philosophy, you should interpret the term "intuition" in the way that is relevant to his theories.) If you decide that two terms are unrelated, then you should not answer the second question; clicking the button adjacent to "unrelated" will in fact remove the popup list used to answer the other question.
- What is the relative level of generality between the two terms, within the current subject area?: You may select from "is more specific than", "is more general than", "is as general as", or "is incomparable to". As before, your answer to this question should be limited to the application of the terms in the part of the taxonomy currently being viewed. You should select 'incomparable/either' if you think the answer is indeterminate or ambiguous. For instance, you might use this option for a topic like 'concept' with respect to philosophy of cognitive science. While the notion of a concept gets specific treatment within the philosophy of cognitive science, it is also a much more general topic in the philosophy of mind.
- Is this idea a philosophical idea at all?: In the bottom left corner of each pair evaluation there is a checkbox next to the text "This is not a philosophical idea." Check this box if you think the term on the left makes no sense in the context. (There may be fragments of phrases or other mistakes in early iterations of the database.) Submitting an evaluation with this box checked generates a message to the InPhO team alerting us to inspect the suspicious term.
For your convenience, at the bottom right of the evaluation box for each pair we have placed buttons linking you to pre-configured searches at various search engines that may help you find resources that are helpful for answering the questions posed. At the top right of each box there is a Reset button that lets you clear out your responses for that pair, should you wish to start again.
You may also choose to "add your own" idea that corresponds to the idea selected and report the significance of the idea pair yourself. If you do so, an autocomplete box will assist you on ideas we already have in the database. Storing your evaluation will save it for later consideration.
